Since I had trouble getting money out of an HSBC account, I decided to try a new bank. I went into a Chase branch to open a checking account where RogerB handled my request. He stated that the account would be free without direct deposit because I had other accounts with Chase. So I deposit two checks to open the account. 10 days later the checks still haven't cleared. I call Chase to find out why because I wish to use the funds to pay off bills. I found out deep inside a phone support pdf that there is a secret "*0" code to reach an operator, it otherwise seems impossible to do so after looping around through menus. Anyways, Loranda Simmons answers and tells me to wait one more day on the checks. While we're talking I ask her to confirm the checking is actually free. She says, no I'll be charged $6 without direct deposit (reminding me of the fiasco with Citibank). Not sure what my actions will be, I get a call from Roger (not realizing that this might be the same Roger). I'm not sure is he's calling randomly to check up on me or if Chase has a CRM system where I got flagged as unhappy, or perhaps Loranda spoke with him. However I inquire again about the free checking and he says that any electronic deposits are considered direct deposits, and otherwise the minimum balance of 1500 is required not to get fees. While I wish that they had a totally free checking option, I think I'll be able to manage with the account as is. I just hope that I don't discover any more misinformation.

Well, since opening the account Chase has already charged me a $19 for "CHECKING SUPPLIES". Which is not so bad if you are aware of it. However it is customary for new accounts to get the first set free, and it wasn't indicated anywhere that I'd be charged. There was no notification that I'd be charged a fee on opening the account, so when it showed up I was a little irritated. As with other banks, this should be free, it's unfortunate that one should even have to ask. Given that this fee was not voluntary, I feel that the Chase rep should have mentioned it when I asked if there were any fees associated with the account. I really had hoped Chase would be better than Citibank, but I'm starting to feel like they will say anything just to get people in the door, even if it's not entirely honest. Still it is only a one time fee, time will tell if they have any other hidden account fees.
Chase screws up again.

I've had it with this bank. Chase lied yet again, as I've received even more hidden fees. I opened the account with a promise of no fees. Yet I find they are charging my account monthly fees. minimum balance fees. I'm not complaining that the accounts have minimum balance fees, it's just that I wouldn't have opened it had the rep been honest (and competent). In retrospect again I find myself at a loss, not because I made a mistake but because the bank is lying in order to make a profit. I have to wait before closing the account otherwise they'll charge even more fees. I really cannot believe how untrustworthy banks are. Hopefully this is a lesson learned for me, although it's not my first bad experience. Word of advice, never trust Chase Bank. In the future I'll sure be tempted to use a tape recorder if for no other reason than keeping them honest.

Chase Bank has charged hidden fees upon opening two accounts. Because I was looking for banks/accounts having no monthly fees, I specifically asked about them. I was told that my accounts would have NO regular fees unless I overdrafted. Now it turns out that the rep of the bank had lied. Furthermore multiple calls have failed to resolve the undisclosed fees or close the accounts without charging more fees. It is ok that Chase charges regular fees on accounts, however that they do so under false pretenses without providing any recourse is (or should be) illegal.

This is regarding a hidden and unexpected finance charge on a billing statement. I have been more or less content with my credit card with them since 2006 and usually paying in full. My September statement was paid in part by the due date and the remainder of the balance was paid one day later. For that I paid $23 in finance charges on the October statement which I paid in addition to October's balance a week before being due. At this point there was zero balance before the November activity. However I discovered another finance charge of $7 in November's statement. I called Chase up to find out why. The first person I spoke to wasn't sure if the charge was an error, but ended up hanging up on me possibly by mistake. I called back and got someone else who explained to me that paying in full by the due date listed on the statement was insufficient for eliminating the finance charge. I thought that was absurd and misleading at best but asked her to explain it to me anyways. Somehow the $23 finance fee listed on the October statement was due before the October statement on which it's printed. She admitted that there was no way I could have avoided November's $7 finance charge from the information I had on the October statement. Ok, but still I pointed out that $7 interest on a $23 hidden balance made no sense that's 30% a month. There must be a technicality I don't understand and she was unable to explain it, but to me it's a scam because I had zero balance going into my November statement. So they charged me a finance fee despite having paid in full. This is the last straw, I will terminate my relationship as soon as it becomes convinient.
