| Contacted FreeCreditReport on 2008-08-01 This is an odd complaint as I have never visited or used FreeCreditReport.com, I never gave them any credit cards or other information.
However I found on a credit statement recently two charges from "CIC*Triple Advantage", each in the amount of 14.95.
This is on a credit card that I haven't used in years, and consequently I got charged a bank late payment fee for noticing the charge sooner. I opened it for the one time discounts it earned me at a store. I knew right away something was fishy.
I called the bank for more information, they bank could not identify the source of the transaction, however they had a phone number for me to call. I told them right away to open an investigation to dispute the charge.
I called the number provided and the system that answered was FreeCreditReport.com's. I got to an operator (who would not provide her name/id). She insisted on knowing my personal information before proceeding, mother's maiden name, SSN, etc. I told her this didn't make sense because she shouldn't have any of my information to being with since I was NOT a customer. She said she needed it to get into the account.
Once she opened the account, she confirmed the charges and told me they were legitimate. However I told her again that I had never had any previous contact with the company and that I was not a customer. Further more I was 100% certain that I never gave them or experian this credit card number. She put me on hold, and then got back to me saying that they would waive half the charges.
I don't know how her logic makes sense, I wasn't just another customer complaining about service, I was accusing them of either making a mistake about signing me up and/or committing fraud by charging credit card numbers held in their database without authorization. Either way I told them I wouldn't accept any charge at all. She put me on hold again and came back with a suggestion that my credit card details had probably been stolen and that an impersonator must have opened the account with them. At this point they agreed to reverse the charges.
Their story about id theft is extremely unlikely because I don't use this card anywhere, and have no other charges on it. I really think that FreeCreditReport.com got my credit card number out of their database, and intentionally or not began charging it.
