They tie each domain to a specific "web package". If you buy two hosting packages and want to move a domain to another package, you have to buy the domain again. This shouldn't affect most people though. I wish the DNS management provided more fine grained control. Technically 1 and 1 lets you point your domains to your own DNS servers, so you have alot of flexibility if you can run your own. I use the shared hosting linux packages. Plenty of space and mysql database access. Unless you really need asp I always recommend linux over microsoft. On a couple of ocassions I needed to call tech support to fix issues with my account. They eventually answered my questions and helped me out, but they were not quick about it.

Apparently another 1and1 user already attempted to add the same domain belonging to my client. CS confirmed that if an unauthorized "add external domain" happens, that the real owner looses control. She said that I'd have to ask the non-authorized user to cancel the external domain transfer and that forcing them to return control isn't possible. Secondly, she wasn't able to even tell me who the non-authorized user was. The only logical conclusion being I had no choice but to find another registrar to manage the nameservers for this domain. It seems 1and1 has some work to do to fix this kind of denial of service flaw.

If you have trouble dealing with a company, your best bet may be for you to contact the Better Business Bureau. Post your company complaints on boards like this one to help educate other consumers. You may also want to report bad companies that have deceptive practices to the FTC. Obviously if you find a company is doing a good job, then the best way for you to help the company is the spread the word!

Research companies yourself before doing business with them. It can save you much time, money, and most importantly leave you with a positive customer experience.
